Dashboard UI Guide

Top App Bar

Holds page identity, global actions and high-priority controls at the top of an application.

Where to use it

Place it across the top of the application for global context and utilities such as search, notifications and account controls.

When to use it

Use it for page identity plus a small set of global or high-priority actions.

When not to use it

Avoid placing dense local filtering or every page action in the app bar.

Behavior and rules

Reserve the app bar for global context and actions; page-specific controls belong in the page header or section toolbar.

Anatomy

Sidebar toggle
Opens or collapses navigation. On mobile it is the only way in, so give it a clear name and a 44px target.
Global search
Finds things across the whole product. It is a global tool, not a filter for one table.
Utility actions
A few product-wide actions (help, theme). Every extra icon here competes with the others.
Notification control
Opens the Notification Center and shows an unread count in text, not just a dot.
User account
Avatar button opening account and sign-out options. It always sits at the end of the bar.

  18. Dashboard Card / Panel — Groups one coherent dashboard task, metric or visualization into a bounded region with clear hierarchy.
  19. Filter Bar — Places the most important scope controls close to the data they affect.
  20. Filter Panel — Collects a larger set of filtering controls in a dedicated surface.
  21. Date Picker / Date Range Picker — Lets users choose one date or a bounded time range for reports, filters and analytics.
